Our editorial standards

Bright Steps exists for SEND families. Everything we publish is written to be accurate, kind, plain-English and safe to act on.

How we write

Every Knowledge Hub topic, story and resource is drafted in plain English, avoiding jargon. Acronyms are spelled out the first time and explained in our glossary.

We aim for short paragraphs, clear headings and practical "what helps" sections rather than abstract theory.

Who reviews it

SEND content is reviewed by people with lived or professional experience — parents, teachers, SENCos and clinicians where relevant. Every Knowledge Hub topic shows its reviewed by name and date.

Where guidance touches on health, education law or safeguarding, we cross-check against UK Government, NHS, IPSEA and recognised charity sources.

How we keep it current

We aim to review each Knowledge Hub topic at least once a year, and immediately when guidance, law or eligibility changes (for example EHCP timescales or DLA rates).

The "last reviewed" date on every topic is the source of truth.

Real-life stories

Life Stories are written by families and young people. We never share identifying details about a child without explicit consent from a parent or guardian, and stories about young people aged 16+ require their own consent.

We add content warnings on stories that touch on school refusal, mental health, bereavement or abuse, and link to crisis support.

Telling us we got it wrong

If you spot something inaccurate, out of date, unsafe, offensive or unkind — please tell us. Every topic, story, news item and community post has a Report this content link.

Reports go directly to our moderation team and we aim to respond within 3 working days.
