What is ARFID?

Three drivers: sensory sensitivity, fear of harm, low interest in food.

5 min read

ARFID is recognised in DSM-5 and ICD-11. It can cause weight loss, deficiency or major impact on family life.

Three drivers (often combined):

  • Sensory — textures, smells, mixing intolerable
  • Fear — of choking, vomiting, allergic reaction
  • Low interest — no hunger cues, eating feels pointless

Common in autistic children and those with sensory differences. Ask for dietitian + referral. Beat helpline: 0808 801 0677.
