After-school restraint collapse

Some children hold everything together at school and then fall apart at home. This is sometimes called after-school restraint collapse.

What it can look like

Meltdowns after school, crying, anger, refusing demands, needing silence, eating lots or refusing food, hiding, being unable to talk, exhaustion, sensory seeking, shutdown.

This does not mean the child was "fine" at school. It may mean they masked, coped, suppressed distress or used all their energy to get through the day.

After-school support ideas

  • Low-demand time after school
  • Snack and drink
  • Quiet space
  • No immediate questions
  • Comfortable clothes
  • Sensory activity
  • Movement
  • Screen decompression if it helps and is balanced
  • Visual routine
  • Gentle connection
  • Avoid homework immediately if possible

You can say:

"I'm glad you're home." "You don't need to talk yet." "Let's help your body reset." "We can do the next thing later."
