NHS England's latest Autism Statistics show more than 230,000 people are waiting for an autism assessment in England. Around nine in ten have waited longer than the NICE-recommended 13 weeks from referral to first appointment. Children make up the majority of the waiting list.
## The numbers
NHS England's quarterly Autism Statistics release shows the open referral list has continued to grow. The vast majority of people waiting have been waiting more than three months, and many waits exceed two years in some Integrated Care Boards.
## What it means in practice
- A diagnosis is **not** required to get SEN support in school or to apply for DLA.
- Schools must use the SEND Code of Practice "graduated approach" — assess, plan, do, review — regardless of diagnosis status.
- Some areas offer "Right to Choose" referrals to independent providers funded by the NHS; this is worth asking your GP about.
## What to do while you wait
- Keep a simple diary of difficulties and what helps (Bright Steps has a free template).
- Ask school for a SEN Support plan now — don't wait for diagnosis.
- Contact the National Autistic Society helpline if you need peer support.
