What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental difference, which means the brain develops and works in a different way. ADHD can affect how a person focuses, starts tasks, finishes tasks, controls impulses, manages emotions, remembers information, organises themselves and responds to the world around them.
ADHD is not laziness. It is not bad behaviour. It is not poor parenting. It is not a lack of intelligence. ADHD is a real difference in brain function that can affect everyday life in many ways.
Some people with ADHD are very active and restless. Some are daydreamy and distracted. Some are both. Some people look confident and energetic on the outside but feel overwhelmed and exhausted inside.
ADHD can affect children, teenagers and adults. Many people are diagnosed in childhood, but some are not diagnosed until adulthood, especially if their symptoms were missed, misunderstood or hidden when they were younger.
ADHD is not a choice
People with ADHD are not choosing to forget, interrupt, lose focus, avoid tasks or become overwhelmed. Their brain may genuinely struggle with attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, time awareness and executive functioning.
This means someone with ADHD may know what they need to do but still find it very hard to actually do it. They may want to start homework, reply to a message, clean their room, leave the house, complete a work task or stay calm — but their brain may struggle to organise the steps needed.
ADHD is not a lack of knowing what to do. It is often a difficulty with doing what you know, at the right time, in the right way, consistently.
