ADHD strengths
ADHD can bring many strengths. Not every person identifies with all of these, but many people with ADHD are:
- Creative and imaginative
- Energetic and curious
- Passionate and funny
- Quick-thinking and good in a crisis
- Innovative and empathetic
- Strong problem-solvers
- Able to hyperfocus
- Big-picture thinkers
- Sensitive to fairness
- Excited by new ideas
- Determined when genuinely interested
Support shouldn't only focus on difficulties. It should also help people build confidence, use their strengths and feel proud of who they are.
Hyperfocus
Hyperfocus is when someone becomes deeply absorbed in something. It can be a real strength when used well, but it can also make it hard to stop, switch tasks or notice time passing.
A person may hyperfocus on gaming, music, art, research, work projects, special interests, building things, writing, problem-solving or business ideas.
What helps: alarms, planned breaks, reminders, and gentle transition warnings before the activity needs to end.
