How autism can present in pre-school and primary-aged children

Autism in children is not one fixed picture. Two autistic children can look completely different. Some are chatty and outgoing; some are quiet and watchful; some are highly active; some seem younger or older than their age.

What you might notice at home

  • Strong need for routine and warnings before change
  • Sensory sensitivities: noise, clothing, food, smells, lighting
  • Intense interests they want to talk about in depth
  • Meltdowns or shutdowns when overwhelmed
  • Big emotional reactions to small changes or transitions
  • Sleep or eating differences

What you might notice at school

  • Difficulty with group work, noisy classrooms or unstructured time
  • Masking — appearing "fine" at school then collapsing at home
  • Trouble making or keeping friends
  • Difficulty with handwriting, PE or following multi-step instructions
  • Anxiety, school refusal or attendance dips

What helps

Visual timetables, sensory breaks, predictable routines, calm communication, clear warnings before change, and adults who understand that behaviour is communication.

When to seek support
