When and how families consider private autism assessments

Some families look into private autism assessments because waits are long. Private assessment is a personal choice — it has benefits and limits, and it is worth thinking it through carefully.

Possible benefits

  • Shorter waiting times
  • Choice of clinician
  • Detailed written reports
  • Sometimes more flexible appointment options

Things to check before paying

  • The clinician or service is registered with an appropriate UK body (e.g. GMC, HCPC, or BPS-registered psychologist).
  • They follow recognised assessment standards (such as NICE guidance) and use accepted tools.
  • The report will be accepted by your , school and local authority — ask in advance.
  • The total cost includes feedback, report and any follow-up.

Things a private report cannot guarantee

  • That the will automatically accept it for ongoing support, prescriptions or shared care.
  • That the local authority will issue an — needs evidence is still required.
  • That school support will change without your input.

Key message

A private diagnosis is still a diagnosis. But the most important outcome is the right understanding and support around your child — not the piece of paper.
