DLA and selective mutism

SM can affect supervision, safety and care needs enough to qualify for DLA.

4 min read

Selective mutism can absolutely qualify for — especially when combined with anxiety, autism, or significant impact on daily life.

What to include on the form

  • Child can''t ask for help in emergencies away from familiar adults
  • Can''t communicate pain, hunger, illness, distress in school/with strangers
  • Needs constant supervision in shops, parks, public toilets, parties, with strangers
  • Can''t safely use public transport alone (no asking for help, no answering)
  • Anxiety leads to school refusal, sleep disruption, physical symptoms

What strengthens the claim

  • Letters from , , school SENCo,
  • A diary of where the child can and can''t speak
  • School reports describing impact
  • Examples comparing your child to peers (a same-age child can ask the dinner lady for a fork — yours cannot)

What about Carer''s Allowance?

If you give 35+ hours of care a week, you may qualify regardless of the time you spend at work.

SM alone is rarely enough on its own, but combined with other needs, push for:

  • A named key worker
  • Time-out card and quiet space
  • Permission for non-verbal communication
  • Adult support for unstructured times

See our Guide for the full step-by-step.
